Publishing House Industry Blog

When there is growth, change becomes necessary. Since I started Uncomfortably Dark Horror as my platform in 2020, it has gone through several changes as my journey has grown, along with my books, my readers, and my reviewers. Now that we have established ourselves as a publishing house in the industry with several awards and award nominations to our credit currently, not including my personal ones, it has become necessary to once again change the way we represent ourselves, our authors, and our community.

We do what we do out of love for the genre, for our peers, and for the stories that we grew up loving. Our team spends hundreds of hours a year reading, reviewing, and sharing books with the masses, all because we enjoy doing it.

While we pride ourselves on being an indie support platform and have become a highly respectable brand in the community, due to extensive issues concerning harassment behind the scenes, we have had to make tough decisions on how we move forward with our reviews and our blog.

These changes are intended to protect our team of volunteer reviewers from further abuse, as well as myself, while still highlighting the community we love so much. It is my hope that as we move forward with our new schedule and our mission to continue to build bridges within the community, you all will continue to support us as greatly as before.

The New Daily Schedule for the Blog will be as listed below:

Monday: Kerry E.B. Black will be sharing reviews promoting diversity and inclusion via books written by marginalized voices as well as sharing articles highlighting days and months of cultural and societal importance and recognition such as Disability Awareness, Pride Month, National Indigenous People’s Day, and more.

Tuesday: This will be an open day for the UD authors to share their news, events, or articles related to horror or indie industry news, promotions they wish to share, excerpts, cover reveals, and more.

Wednesday: Besu Tadesse will continue his horror gaming reviews on a weekly basis while sharing the third Wednesday of each month with Kit Power’s essay series “Exploring the Labyrinth.”

Thursday: Donna Latham will be bringing her monthly vintage pulp horror reviews to the weekly blog celebrating those that came before us and delving deep into her archives to bring out the oldies, the goodies, the terrifying, and the forgotten so they can enjoy the light once more.

Friday: This will be a day to spotlight other horror industry creatives, such as those in film and graphic novels. Far too often, many of us want to get involved in these other areas of the horror media scene but do not know where to start. Helping make those connections is now part of our commitment to the community moving forward. Several members of our review team will be involved in this effort.

Saturday: We would be remiss to not have a day dedicated to our own work, releases, authors, and events so every Saturday, Danielle Yvonne will be bringing the community up to speed on what is New, Next, and on Deck for Uncomfortably Dark Horror.

Sunday Morning: Christina will be sharing movie reviews, including indie films, and select award-nomination reviews during awards seasons including Splatterpunk Awards, Stokers, the Wonderland award, and more.

Sunday Afternoon: Indie Industry News, Reviews, and Events! Every Sunday, Candace and team will be sharing community reviews, upcoming projects, events, and more that are happening across the industry. This includes film festivals, kickstarters, publisher partner releases, reviews, and more.

REVIEW REQUESTS:

Effective immediately, we will no longer be accepting personal review requests from indie authors via the current website form. This includes requests emailed directly to our reviewers.

There will be an updated form for all requests that must be completed for any review request. That form will be sent to the executive team email, added to our Review Request list, and sent to the review team based on the type of request.

Request Types will be split as listed below:

Publishing House Requests from all publishers who are actively publishing and signing indie authors will be reviewed in the order received and shared on the Uncomfortably Dark Blog on the Sunday Indie Industry Post as well as shared to our socials, Amazon, Goodreads, Net Galley, etc.

Indie Author Requests for reviews of their individual books, new releases, projects, or kickstarters will be reviewed in the order received and will be shared on our UD Facebook page as well as on Amazon, Goodreads, Net Galley, etc. These reviews will no longer be shared on our Publishing House Blog.

*Submitting a review request is NOT a guarantee that your book will be reviewed. If the reviewer cannot recommend the book, it will not be reviewed on our site, blog, or socials. We may contact you directly with feedback if you opt-in for that option on the new form. This is directly related to our mission statement which has always been “bringing you the best in horror, one uncomfortably dark page at a time.”

*Any request sent to our review team via their personal email or direct message on any platform will be re-directed to utilize the Review Request form on our website. This is to ensure fairness in scheduling the reviews and to make sure we are able to read each book in the true order received.

The NEW FORM will go live tomorrow night at 8 p.m. July 27.
