Uncomfortably Dark Review Team Stats for 2025!
It's been a fantastic YEAR for the Review Team! Since the team goes on a winter break from Nov. 15 through Jan. 15 to enjoy some downtime, we are going to share their stats for the year! And they are incredible!
Almost 500 books read and over 90 THOUSAND pages! That's a huge accomplishment for this team. Be sure to say thanks to them for all they do for indie horror!
They volunteer to do this. They are not paid. They all have day jobs, families, lives outside of the book world that we all know and love so much. I simply cannot thank them enough for the time they give up, the sacrifice they make every day to read, to write reviews, to post to our blog and to social media, to share our posts and yours, and so many other things that I cannot name them all!
HUGE THANKS TO THIS ENTIRE TEAM AND EVERY SINGLE PAGE READ THIS YEAR!
Christina Pfeiffer, Warn Iverson, Dani Yvonne, Christopher Besonen, Rachel Schommer, Donna Latham, Sonja Ska, Ali Jane Sweet, and every guest reviewer!
Did you know that the team reads and reviews graphic novels, award nominees for the Stoker, Booker and the Splatterpunk awards, mainstream horror, Godless reads, Audible, brand-new ARCs and more? All horror, all sub-genres, in almost all formats?
Need Something Reviewed? Check out our Author Services Page to put your request in today!
The team returns from break on Jan.15 and will begin posting reviews to the blog that week.
FOR THE GAMERS
Thankskilling Day
Reviewed by Besu Tadesse
Thankskilling Day is a survival horror game published by Out of Controller Games and released in December 2022. In the game, you play as a young boy visiting his family’s turkey farm for the Thanksgiving holiday when tragedy strikes – your entire family is stalked and murdered by Killgrim, a humanoid turkey creature dressed as a colonial European Pilgrim with elongated features and a thirst for blood. You run, hide, and fight your way through the house over the course of an evening, unlocking the secrets of your family’s success with their farm and the horrors that lie below. The game, as I’m aware, is relatively short (more on that later).
There aren’t many Thanksgiving-themed horror games, so it was refreshing to find this. And the premise is solid – surviving the terror as punishment for the sins of others. The graphics and controls are identical to the hit 90s game Resident Evil, with top-down camera shots in each room that give you a very slanted, disconcerting feeling. There is also a twist – you can switch to first-person mode at any time, allowing you to really see what is happening in each room or as you’re being chased by Killgrim. The graphics are also presented in an old-style VHS cassette mode, with the view becoming more static as Killgrim gets closer and switching from Play to Fast Forward (FF) when you run. It’s a unique way to present the action and would have been really compelling in a more polished game.
However, the game fails on two fronts. First, it’s punishing. Once Killgrim gets you in its sights, it’s nearly impossible to avoid it unless you escape to the next section of the game. The layout of each room is too narrow, and you don’t receive any weapons or other objects that can slow its pace to help you find a hiding spot until further into the game. Once it grabs you and attacks, you’re basically dead before you know it. The second is that the game is prone to random bugs. The best chance I had to progress was when I was captured on the top floor of the house and glitched onto the first floor, where I could find a hiding spot and reach the next switch. In another playthrough, Killgrim launched me onto the roof of the house outside of the available code, which crashed my game.
Ultimately, I gave up and watched another player’s playthrough to see if there was even a chance to beat it and figure out the story. The story was, in fact, very good, but the overall experience felt like an endurance test rather than a fun romp through my darkest anxieties. Overall, I don’t recommend this game unless you are ready to deal with your own rage and exhaustion.
Thankskilling Day is available on PC. If you feel like you will have better luck beating it, then I wish you all the best.
