Smilin’ Sam’s Corn Maze

By Stephanie Scissom

For a short novella, there was a lot packed into it, grief and sadness, characters that you could care about, and an unlikely duo that team up to try to solve an decades old cold case before one of them succumbs to a devastating illness.

Catherine, now in her 70s and facing a fast-acting illness begins having vivid dreams of her daughter Elizabeth, lost decades ago during a family trip to a Halloween attraction. Elizabeth had never been found, and their family had never been the same. Catherine, desperate for answers, begins retracing the steps of the old case, investigating it on her own, hoping for closure.

Her search leads her to an unlikely ally, and her dreams turn into waking visions narrated by the corn maze’s own creepy mascot, Smilin’ Sam himself. Equal parts mystery and a chilling tale of loss and regret, Smilin’ Sam’s Corn Maze is much than it appears.

Highly recommend this sharply written one sitting read.
