VINTAGE PAPERBACK REVIEW OF THE MONTH

The Sendai

by William Woolfolk

Reviewed by Donna Latham

The author knew what he was doing using IVF as the main theme in a horror book written in 1980. This is around when IVF started to become more widely performed but there was still plenty of controversy, condemnation and mistrust in the process.

More thriller than horror, until the last few chapters, I was so immersed in this story. From the highly detailed (almost textbook like, not gory) description of a C-section being performed to the descriptions of the different genetically engineered creatures I almost feel as if the author was a doctor or scientist himself.

I kind of found the romance aspect a little blah, almost not needed in my opinion. But I do love how the author made Mary someone with a brain and who knows what she wants and isn't some simpering damsel, but a woman who won't give up her career as an engineer for a man. I feel this was an uncommon portrayal of female characters back in the 80s.

I don't often read Afterwords, but wow it was short but very interesting. Woolfolk cited several examples of genetic engineering from the late 70s. The Afterword made me think of the story in a whole new way.

"Genetic engineering has the potential to alter mankind as no other science ever has or likely will.

Shall we let our scientists do it? Do we have a right to stop them?"

GAMER REVIEW OF THE MONTH!

SOMA

Reviewed by Besu Tadesse

Released in September 2015 for PC, SOMA is a first-person psychological survival horror game published by Frictional Games. You play Simon, the survivor of a car accident who agrees to undergo experimental brain scans as part of his recovery. During one of those brain scans, he is transported into an underwater research facility where he is tasked with determining what happened to the crew and solving the mystery of who he and the facility truly are.

As a first-person game of this nature, it was certainly ahead of its time. The atmosphere is creepy from beginning to end, with twists and turns. Many of the sections feel like never-ending labyrinths, spiraling around themselves as you try to avoid enemies. While this adds to the drama and darkness, it can irk some people if they have other things to do (go to work, pay bills, buy groceries, etc.). The enemy battles, though few and far between, can also be frustrating at times due to the clunkiness of the controls in tight spaces. Still, the enemies themselves are something out of a true technological nightmare.

As for its story and its other elements… I don’t want to say too much. The ending is quite a twist, and how you get to the ending requires a lot of smaller surprises. I also didn’t include much about the hazards that you encounter because, quite frankly, the shock of their designs is part of the fun. This is definitely the type of game that one should walk into with as little information as possible. Basically, if you’re into all the dark genres – horror, thrillers, dystopian science fiction – this game is for you.

This game is still available on PC and Xbox One, with the latest version on the Nintendo Switch released in July 2025. It’s a great game, and I highly recommend it . The spiritual successor title called Ontos is also slated to release on PC this year. Check it out!
