As March winds to a close, I still have more wonderful women that need to be recognized. This list will focus on new and rising stars in horror, those that are ushering in this new era along with the established leaders that forged the way. With so much talent in this industry, new and old voices are rising together to make sure we are heard, that we are seen, and that our presence here is acknowledged as well as celebrated.
These ladies below are either new to the genre, or rising stars and I sincerely hope that you seek them out, read them, applaud them, and see the messages they are leaving beneath the blood-soaked bodies on the floor. In no particular order, and by no means exhaustive, today we honor some of the amazing talent in the new wave!
Kate Dejonge (Kingston)-Kate is a mom, wife, sister, and daughter to a pack of crazy people. She's always been a little on the weird side and loves to tell everyone that 'normal is boring'. You'll notice this in her work. She started seeing ghosts when she was a small child and now openly converses with them, despite how it makes her look in public. She has devoted her life to the exploration of the paranormal...on the side. Kate is also a mental health advocate and survivor. She has been guiding and mentoring others through empathic counseling and energy healing since 1999, sharing her mental wellness resources with anyone who needs it IRL and online.
Nat Whiston - Nat Whiston is from Birmingham, England. She published her first short story, What's Eating You on Godless Horrors, and did a collaboration story with Ash Ericmore - Your Move. She has the two novels of her three-part Extreme Horror/Dark Fantasy series, called Death Walks with Me and Time is Fleeting currently out. She has published the popular body horror short 'Feel Her Pain' and has a kid's series with Little Cape Publishing called Niko's Nightmare Portal Pet.
Asher Dark - Asher Dark is an American author. Her first novella was Vampires and Whatever Else. She writes splatterpunk and extreme horror. Asher is a Star Wars nerd and loves anime. She spends her days with her dogs, reading and writing. You can find her on Instagram and Facebook!
Angelique Jordonna - Angelique Jordonna is a romance psych/thriller author from Michigan. She spent several years in San Antonio before moving to Kansas, and then back to Michigan where she currently resides with her wife, kids, and three dogs. Angelique spent her early years playing music and writing poetry, having several of her poems published in anthology books. She eventually transitioned into writing short stories and recently finished her first full-length novel. Currently, she is working on several other projects.
Ruthann Jagge - Ruthann grew up in Upstate New York, where her favorite month of October is otherworldly. She writes dark, gothic, and fantasy fiction from her current home on a rural cattle ranch in Texas. Many successful anthologies feature her short stories, along with a novella and co-authored novel. Two novels are in progress for 2025 including an anticipated sequel and a Southern Gothic-inspired horromantacy.
Drew Huff - If you want to be excited and enthralled, read Drew Huff. Her fiction is pure action, full of unique concepts, worlds, and characters. She's the author of fast-paced supernatural horror novel "Free Burn" (Dark Matter INK, March 2024), LGBT sci-fi novella "Landlocked In Foreign Skin" (January 2025), cosmic horror novel "The Divine Flesh" (Dark Matter INK, March 2025) and is querying her dark urban fantasy manuscript, "The Exodontists". Her short fiction has appeared numerous anthologies.
Nico Bell - Nico Bell is the author of several horror books including Static Scream and Food Fright. In addition, she's a fiction editor and anthology curator having co-published Diet Riot: A Fatterpunk Anthology and Mine: An Anthology of Body Autonomy Horror. When she isn't writing or editing, she's playing with her dog Egg or in the kitchen attempting to bake a new gluten-free recipe!
Dicey Grenor - Dicey Grenor is an African American wife, mother, attorney, and author of racy fiction. She enjoys being analytical and thinking outside-the-box in professional and creative contexts. Before following her passion and writing fiction, she earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Public Administration, and Juris Doctor degree. In 2011, Dicey published her first novel, which set the tone for her brand of sexy, wild, daring, and risky stories. Fascinated by supernatural creatures and the dark side, Dicey also published Vol. 1 of The Narcoleptic Vampire Series, in 2011. There are currently seven books in this erotic urban fantasy/ horror series, which brings her total to ten self-published books. Dicey is proud of writing multicultural characters and mixing genres. As a proponent for diversity and inclusion, Dicey also created and moderated the Multiculturalism and Diversity in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror literary panel at Comicpalooza: The Texas International Comic Con, in 2014-2017.
Chantell Renee - There are many ways to tell a story. Sometimes it's with fear, sometimes it's with fantasy and others it's with love and or pain. Writing in and out of several gernes has kept the stories this author has told as true to the spark that formed them. Therefore, you might find a coming-of-age story told through Horror. Or a human rights story told through fantasy or science fiction. Learn more about this author at chantellrenee.com
Elizabeth J. Brown - Elizabeth J. Brown was born in Kent, England. This probably explains her obsession with tea and cake. She currently writes the Brimstone Chorus series - dark fantasy horror featuring demons, witches and a whole host of things that go bump in the night. Her debut novel, The Laughing Policeman, takes place in 1980s England and features detectives, dark supernatural forces and dry humour. When she isn’t in front of her laptop or spending time with her family, Elizabeth is usually absorbed in a book, film or anything that involves the strange, fantastical or supernatural.
Denise Tapscott - Denise was born and raised in California. She left her heart in San Francisco, but somehow managed to leave her soul in New Orleans. When she's not creating and cultivating her characters, she enjoys dining on spicy tuna rolls, sharing a bottle of red wine with friends and watching the latest flick (especially scary films). From time to time this radiant left-handed pirate will even challenge others to a fencing match or two. But watch out, this Gemini is determined to win!
RJ Powell - R.J. Powell can be found living a tranquil life with her pets and children. She enjoys spending time with her family and gardening. Books she has written include Madness in Tandem, Thrice the Madness, Eight Cases of Jane, Dollface, Vasectomy, and Feeler Deep. Dollface can also be found on Audible.
