HUNGERSTONE
By Kat Dunn
In the Gothic, period novel, Hungerstone, Kat Dunn retells the 1872 Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. However, Dunn’s work firmly embraces justified, feminine rage. For example, Carmilla possesses great agency, making her a mysterious, unaccompanied woman who accepts the shelter of the manor after a carriage accident.
Dunn’s Carmilla’s all about embracing the wildness and aching hunger within the repressed Victorian females, especially our lead. In Hungerstone, our lead is married to a corrupt steel maker who has tired of his bride and invites her replacement and an entire hunting party to his newly-purchased, decrepit manor, leaving his wife to rebuild and prepare everything necessary for a Victorian social occasion.
This explores the psychological toll of emotional neglect, and I’m here for the invigorating result!
