Kerry is back with 2 awesome book reviews for this week!
Rooms
by Lauren Oliver
Lauren Oliver’s novel, Rooms, is more than a haunted house story. It’s layered, with multiple perspectives presented in each chapter. The chapters told from the ghosts’ POV are told in the first person, lending an immediacy to their thoughts.
Oliver weaves these story lines to create an interesting, adult story (This is decidedly not YA) filled with sorrow and mystery. Follow the twisting threads to a satisfying conclusion.
My Sister, the Serial Killer
by Korede Oyinkan
The world over, many big sisters look out for their little siblings. In Oyinkan Braithwaite’s debut novel, My Sister, the Serial Killer, Korede has a beautiful, younger sis, Ayoola, with a bit of a killer problem. Korede, a nurse at a Nigerian hospital, helps where and how she can when Ayoola gets into jams, offering advice and cleaning, until her little sister sets her sights on a doctor of Korede’s acquaintance.
As an oldest sister of much more beautiful and talented younger siblings, I sympathized with Korede and was thankful my family doesn’t grow serial killers! Well written and darkly humorous, with brief chapters and crisp writing, this book holds attention and moves quickly.
More about Kerry E.B. Black
Kerry E.B. Black writes from an over-stuffed little house situated along a fog-enshrouded river in the land where Romero's Dead roamed. Her children think she's dull, and their dogs agree, but the family cats, Poe and Hemingway, feel differently. The felines find a kinship with their nocturnal buddy and encourage Kerry to write.
