The Suicide Motor Club

Truly vile vampires embrace the open road in the US during the late 60’s in The Suicide Motor Club by Christopher Buehlman. These brutes enjoy their depravity, and early on, they target a family of three. A little boy’s mother desperately hangs onto her son while her husband tries to drive them to safety, but the vampires win the game of tug-of-war and the husband crashes. Only the mom survives to become a force intent on vengeance against the fiends who robbed her of all that was important to her. This is a unique approach to the vampire legend, and I routed for and admired Jude. This tale of good versus evil ends with a possibility of a sequel.
They Drown Our Daughters
by Katrina Monroe
Set in a seaside town, the modern Gothic novel, They Drown Our Daughters by Katrina Monroe, tells the story of a family of females doomed to drown. A woman going through a divorce returns to her seaside, childhood home with her teen daughter to care for her aging, mentally demented mother. Their family, it is believed, is cursed, and this book explores that generationally, using different, clearly understood timelines - and lots of “smiling with their teeth.” It’s a book rich in atmosphere, salt spray, challenged mother-daughter relationships, and bubbling thalassophobia. Readers will never look on a pink seashell quite the same way!

It Came From the Trees
by Ally Russell
In Ally Russell’s MG horror adventure novel, a pre-teen girl, Jenna, and her friend go deep in the woods on a scouting camping trip, only to witness her friend’s abduction by a Big Foot-type creature. Nobody believes her description of the event, not even the police, so she decides to rescue her friend on her own.
My little Bear and I were on the edge of our proverbial seats when Jenna joins a different group of scouts to venture back into the scene of the crime where the whole group pulls together in clever ways to overcome a frightening adversary. This atmospheric work balances the issue of being young and disbelieved with some real chills. Couple that with some great characters and a subtle but important introduction to social issues , and a powerful message of friendship and never giving up.
