That Which Feeds Us
by Keala Kendall
In the Young Adult/New Adult Tropical Gothic novel, That Which Feeds Us by Keala Kendall, a displaced Hawaiian woman searches a privately-owned Hawaiian island converted into an exclusive resort, looking for her missing twin. A storm strands her with a few elite guests, a strange staff, a deranged and ill resort owner, many rules, and growing unease.
Through her search, she breaks many of the rules. She remembers some of the heritage taught by her grandparents when she was small, and as she learns much more about her culture, so does the reader (or at least, this reader. You might already know everything disclosed.) The discoveries are dealt out with a restrained hand, lending to the Gothic pacing.
With a setting as lush and beautiful as Hawaii, it takes expertise to reveal an inner colonial and racist rot as pungent as the decaying fruit for which the resort is renowned. This should be a hit with fans of Mexican Gothic and She is a Haunting.

The Widows of Winding Gale
by Kealan Patrick Burke
With atmosphere as thick and inhabited as the green-hued fog that settles around the few desolate residents of the novella, The Widows of Winding Gale by the excellent Kealan Patrick Burke is the perfect seaside read! On the eve of All Hallows, the widows of a desolate island off the coast of Ireland carve their turnips, rebuff a land speculator, and worry about their fishermen husbands who should have already returned from their latest expedition.
Life on the island is hard as the stone shaped by the unyielding sea, sharp as the shells crushed beneath their feet, yet nothing prepared the tough souls of Winding Gale for the horrors that slip through the thinned veil. The narrative is told from multiple, easily followed perspectives. I’ve read several books by this author, and all were excellent, but this is my favorite to date.
So, are you longing for an Eldritch sea goddess with mind control, a hunger for vengeance, and equally creepy kin? Of course you are!
Fans of the television series “The Living and the Dead” will greatly enjoy the folk horror and speculative elements.
