REVIEW OF THE WEEK!
DEJA VU
by L. Marie Wood
Book 4 of The Red Thread Saga
There is no possible way to review this book in-depth without spoilers, so I won’t talk about the storyline with much detail here. What I will say is that if you are not reading The Red Thread Saga by L. Marie Wood, you are missing what may be the series of the decade, an absolute masterpiece of a story, written outside the definitions of what normally dictates genre or style. She calls it slipstream. I’m calling it brilliant.
As the story continues here in DÉJÀ VU, the layers begin to show their depths, multiple storylines weaving in and out of this single timeline, connecting the dots for the reader in a way that will rock you to your core. If you thought you had the slightest handle on what was truly going on after reading IMPRINT, that stops now. The range of emotions you will experience within a single chapter, hell, within a single page is breathtaking, coming fast and hard, like a prize fighter taking a rival down with a series of gut punches so rapid that the opponent has no choice but to fold.
Wood comes for the reader with lightning-fast strikes: emotion, action, mystery, horror, tension; line after line, rocking your head back with a perfectly-placed uppercut, then a body blow. Uppercut! Jab! Jab! Jab! The crowd is roaring in your ears. Everyone on their feet, only you can’t hear it, can’t see it. There is only the story, captivating you, holding you hostage on the edge of your seat. The pages turn. Your heart breaks. Your breath catches in your throat. Every single moment pushes you deeper in a reality that is not possible, but yet… Wood makes it possible.
This is an author at the absolute top of her game. This is a story that transcends genre fiction, showing us what a story can be, what it should be. This is love, betrayal, grief, loss, fear, family, and loyalty; all of the bonds that make us part of humanity, being tested, pushed, and re-written within a world that only Wood could create.
The Red Thread Saga is called slipstream, as defined by the writer in a recent interview with Uncomfortably Dark, “Slipstream uses elements of multiple subgenres to create something new, something that has its own expectations of flow and conclusion. The beauty of slipstream is that those expectations shift depending upon the subgenres that are borrowed from. It’s a beautifully experimental genre that allows authors to truly explore storytelling outside the boundaries of convention."-- L. Marie Wood
I’m going to call it what it is: a new era for storytelling, ushered in by a world-class wordsmith.
There is one book left in the series, KISMET, and I will warn you now, prepare to be wrecked.
