1-19-25 — Christina Critiques Books AND Movies

Writer's picture: Christina PfeifferChristina Pfeiffer

Welcome back to regular programming, my friends! I have read so many amazing books over break so dust off that already anxiety-inducing TBR so we can add more together.

Let’s get into them.

THE DEMON OF DEVIL’S CAVERN: A Rory Daggett Story

By: Brennan LaFaro

Release: 4/19/24

KU: No      Hoopla: No

Synopsis: Disclaimer - this is the second book in the series but the story isn’t difficult to follow A cowboy and his sidekick must save their town from revenge but sometimes the dead just won’t die.

First line: “It started with a knock.”

Favorite line: “You’re taller than I would’ve guessed.”

“Lord, Mr. Daggett. That how you learned to greet a lady?”

Thoughts: I loved this SO much! From the beginning to the end, it felt as if I was actually in Buzzard’s Edge with Rory and company. LaFaro engages the readers in such a way, we want to read slowly to stay in this universe.

Rating: 5/5

IF TODAY THE SUN SHOULD SET ON MY HOPES AND CARES

By: Ben Arzate

Release: 12/4/24

Pages: 165

KU: Yes     Hoopla: No

Synopsis: A janitor finds a secret in the school bathroom that sets off a chain of events that no one is prepared for.

First line: “Pigs could bring a defamation lawsuit against humans for comparing ourselves to them.”

Favorite line: “I’d gotten answers but now I was more lost than ever.”

Thoughts: Bleak and hopeless, Arzate shows the darkness of humanity, within ourselves, and those around us. Loneliness, radicalization, and family secrets cause the reader to feel as helpless as the characters.

Rating: 5/5

THE ELEVATOR GAME

By: Z. Martin

Release: 11/30/24

Page count: 47

KU: Yes      Hoopla: No

Synopsis: A man down on his luck and ready to end it all decides to tempt ten unknown fates to start again with the woman he loves.

First line: “Ten dollars and forty-six cents left to my name.”

Favorite line: “We had a nice long run, but everything’s got to end at some point.”

Thoughts: I wish it was longer. As the chapters and the novelette are short, it’s hard to keep up with what is happening because it’s happening too quickly. But we still get enough of this desperation and want for a better life to relate to him.

Rating: 4/5

DWELLINGS: All Hallows Eve Special

By: Jay Stephens

Release: 10/30/24

Pages: 44

KU: No     Hoopla: Yes

Synopsis: When one of the gang goes missing but somehow shows up a bit different - can they must battle things that go bump in the night.

First line: “Wish you were here with me at Poe’s grave, baby bat.”

Favorite line: “I have to carve a little cross in your forehead.”

Thoughts: Stephens can do no wrong. Imagine Happy Tree Friends and Archie but super goth. Maybe that would come close to the feel of this series. And the gore is definitely gor-ing.

Rating: 5/5

Other recommendations: DWELLINGS, EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS
