This series will be showcased on my Patreon first, every Friday this fall and winter, through early 2026. If you are not a patron, look for the new author spotlight to appear here on the blog every Saturday! These will be for incredibly talented, but lesser known, authors that truly deserve a spotlight on their work!
As is our mission here at Uncomfortably Dark, we want to be a community support and while how we do that may change over time, we will always find a way to shed light on the many wonderfully talented people in this space. Please check out their interviews, click on their links, and check out their work for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Today, I want you to meet Somer Canon. Somer is an award-winning author, one of the kindest ladies I've ever met, and just a constant ray of sunshine. Please check out her spotlight below and click the links after to grab a book or two!

Meet Somer Canon!
- Introduce yourself in 4 sentences or less.
My name is Somer (pronounced like "summer." I know, I know, but I didn't pick it, yell at my mom). I'm a writer, a reader, a wife, and a mother to two sons and a bunch of cats. I'm a bit of a solitary creep, but I'm happy to chat books and movies, especially of the horror variety. My opinions can be spicy, but I try to be positive.
- Describe your style of writing in 2 sentences or less.
I write character-driven tales that are weird and mostly supernatural, but not always.
- What is your favorite type of horror to write?
I love writing about people in pain reacting to the world around them and finding themselves in the process. Is it always positive? Nope, but growth is painful.
- What is your favorite book or character you’ve written so far?
I think that there's a council that meets quarterly to discuss authors who choose favorite books of their own and mete out harsh punishments to them. I will say, each book of my own has a favorite 'something', though.
My favorite character is Ida Conklin from my book A FRESH START. My favorite final line is from my debut work, VICKI BEAUTIFUL, but my favorite ending is from another book, YOU'RE MINE. The best, most poetic line I've ever written, and my single favorite descriptor is in my book THE HAG WITCH OF TRIPP CREEK. And my favorite antagonist? That's the demented fairy in KILLER CHRONICLES, easy.
- Who are your top 5 favorite authors?
This is a constantly evolving list for me because I try to read as broadly as I can, even though I could do better, but I'm working on it! Let me list 5 who I've read recently who blew me away.
-Timaeus Bloom. "The Birth of Sound" is the opening story in BEYOND THE BOUNDS OF INFINITY and it was simply amazing.
-Kenzie Jennings. She's a "never miss" author for me. A WOMAN LIKE JO was an incredible collection.
-Pedro Iniguez. I ran into a story of his in Apex Magazine titled "A Final Song for the Ages" that was superb.
-John Boden. Just read everything from him and you'll live a better life, okay?
-Amanda Headlee. Talk about someone on the rise. She works hard, gets her stuff in lots of anthologies, and her standalone works never fail to impress. I'm a certified fan.
- What most inspires you to keep writing when imposter syndrome hits the hardest?
Stubbornness.
- Is there a genre, sub-genre, or trope you’ve not written, that you’d like to try?
Historical Horror has always called to me.
- What is your hope for your writing career for the next five years? As in where do you see yourself?
Honestly, and I hope this doesn't come off as fake, but my hope is simply to still be around, doing my thing, and putting out works. I've been around long enough to see a lot of my peers drop off. I'd like to avoid that disappearing act.
- Pitch your current WIP in three sentences or less.
Was that gargoyle on the roof always there?
- Where can we find you online and where can readers see you next?
You can find me on Instagram under my name, on BlueSky, and I'm also on YouTube talking about books that I like. If you're interested in my (admittedly few) appearances, check out my socials!
