This series will be showcased on my Patreon first, every Friday this fall and winter, through early 2026. If you are not a patron, look for the new author spotlight to appear here on the blog every Saturday! These will be for incredibly talented, but lesser known, authors that truly deserve a spotlight on their work!

As is our mission here at Uncomfortably Dark, we want to be a community support and while how we do that may change over time, we will always find a way to shed light on the many wonderfully talented people in this space. Please check out their interviews, click on their links, and check out their work for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.

This week's Spotlight is on Kayleigh Dobbs, author, reviewer, and creator of Happy Goat Horror. She also works with French Press, a small indie press owned by Stephen Kozeniewski.

MEET KAYLEIGH DOBBS

- Introduce yourself in 4 sentences or less.

I'm Kayleigh Dobbs, an indie author and book reviewer. I love horror too much, am very passionate about indie horror in particular, and spend all of my time buried in some sort of bookish activity.

- Describe your style of writing in 2 sentences or less.

My style of writing (I hope) is accessible - I wish I was more literary but, alas, that isn't me - and I blend horror with comedy/dark humour very often.

- What is your favorite type of horror to write?

I write "regular" horror (as in, not funny), but horror comedy is the most enjoyable writing experience for me. I'm especially fond of writing supernatural horror that contains demons, hellish evils, and the apocalypse.

- What is your favorite book or character you’ve written so far?

I am very proud of my most recent collection, 'The End', which is a little book of apocalyptic stories. My favourite of my own characters, however, is a guy called Stephen Plunkett, from a story entitled 'Bits and Bobs' (not featured in 'The End'). Plunkett is kind of an a-hole, but I had so much fun writing him that I might have to bring him back. He's an unfortunate dude that doesn't quite get why his interests and personality are so off-putting to people, that winds up in ridiculous situations.

- Who are your top 5 favorite authors ?

My Top 5 Favourite Authors change from time to time (Stephen King is obviously there but that's such a standard answer that let's pretend he's not included so I can fit another name in). I love so many but current favourites are Adam Nevill, Rachel Harrison, Erica Summers, S.Q. McGrath, and Kit Power.

- What most inspires you to keep writing when imposter syndrome hits the hardest?

Uhhh, it's not so much as a desire to keep writing as an inability to stop. I have confidence crashes all the time and sometimes take time off, but I never stop coming back. I just love stories!

- Is there a genre, sub-genre, or trope you’ve not written, that you’d like to try?

Sci-fi horror. I have ideas but haven't delved into them yet because I'm very anxious about the million things I'll get wrong with the sci-fi aspect.

- What is your hope for your writing career for the next five years? As in where do see yourself?

I'd ideally love to be an upward trajectory, maybe selling more stories, and I'd definitely like to have a couple of novellas and novels out. My fear of failure is quite extreme, so I try not to think ahead, lest my brain is horrible and shows me the failure version of my plans.

- Pitch your current WIP in three sentences or less

It's currently untitled but it's about a woman in an abusive relationship who realises something is extremely wrong one day when her partner starts treating her nicely.

- Where can we find you online and where can readers see you next?

I'm on YT, FB, IG, and my website daily, and the best place to find me is through my review profiles (Happy Goat Horror on all platforms) - I don't tend to log on to my personal accounts as much. I do realise I should, in the name of authoring, obviously!
