This series will be showcased on my Patreon first, every Friday this fall and winter, through early 2026. If you are not a patron, look for the new author spotlight to appear here on the blog every Saturday! These will be for incredibly talented, but lesser known, authors that truly deserve a spotlight on their work!
As is our mission here at Uncomfortably Dark, we want to be a community support and while how we do that may change over time, we will always find a way to shed light on the many wonderfully talented people in this space. Please check out their interviews, click on their links, and check out their work for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This week's spotlight is on Rob Grimoire. I've recently started reading Rob's work since being featured in the Dark Spores anthology with him last fall. He's incredibly talented and just getting started. Check out his work when you finish reading the spotlight!
MEET ROB GRIMOIRE
-Introduce yourself in 4 sentences or less.
Names Rob Gilmore. I write under the pen name Rob Grimoire (I know, super creative, lol) and on November 1st, 2025, I will have been at this writing thing for 3 years total. I really enjoy writing, and my goal is to create portals of escapism, if only for a while.
- Describe your style of writing in 2 sentences or less.
Ahhhhh, this is a hard question. I just write. However it comes, whenever it comes. It's up to the reader to hear and describe my “voice”.
- What is your favorite type of horror to write?
The unexpected, the bent, the broken. I love experimenting with horror while keeping to the rhythm of the story being told. No limits, advance with the stories, and make you shift in your seat as many times as I can.
- What is your favorite book or character you’ve written so far?
Another tough question. It will have to be the main character in my story Quicksilver in the Spacefunk! Anthology. A little Afrofuturist Sci-Fi, a little horror, and a wild.
- Who are your top 5 favorite authors?
Shirley Jackson. Toni Morrison. Junji Ito. Octavia Butler. Mary Shelley.
Special shout-out to Kei Urana.
- What most inspires you to keep writing when imposter syndrome hits the hardest?
So, I don't believe in impostor syndrome. I used to believe in it, until I learned about the false equivalencies applied to the concept. Who are we comparing ourselves to and why? The truth is the feeling that gatekeepers made a mistake “letting us in” without acknowledging our own talents is ridiculous. Low self-esteem? Sure, but if you look at the demographic of people who suffer from this “syndrome” you will see a pattern of mostly queer, BIPOC, women, and other marginalized groups are mainly those who suffer from it, and that's not a mistake, it's by design, because who are we to belong in a space where we thrive? Why is it possible that the brown man is capable of greatness? Gotta be a fluke, right?
- Is there a genre, sub-genre, or trope you’ve not written, that you’d like to try?
Ha! Romance, rather, relationships of all kinds. When you learn how to write a competent relationship, you can apply that to so many stories, and I'll go further, I want to be better at writing all types of relationships from asexual romance to platonic friendships with deep, unbreakable bonds.
- What is your hope for your writing career for the next five years? As in where do see yourself?
I'd like to be writing some really cool stuff in writing rooms for shows, comics, films, and games.
- Pitch your current WIP in three sentences or less.
2 gods and one avatar. The fire and fury of the new god, the human god.
The last horn, the harbinger of the final sun.
- Where can we find you online and where can readers see you next?
I'll be at MultiverseCon in Atlanta October 17-19, and JordanCon 2026.
