This series will be showcased on my Patreon first, every Friday this fall and winter, through early 2026. If you are not a patron, look for the new author spotlight to appear here on the blog every Saturday! These will be for incredibly talented, but lesser known, authors that truly deserve a spotlight on their work!
As is our mission here at Uncomfortably Dark, we want to be a community support and while how we do that may change over time, we will always find a way to shed light on the many wonderfully talented people in this space. Please check out their interviews, click on their links, and check out their work for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This week's author spotlight is on a new author in the industry, Jim Donohue, who is 70 years old. Proof that it is never too late to live your dreams. This spotlight may be my favorite one so far. Read on about Jim, and do yourself a favor, pick up his debut novella.
MEET JIM DONOHUE
Introduce yourself in 4 sentences or less.
My name is Jim Donohue, and I started my Horror Writing journey 10 months ago. I'll be 70 in April, and I've never been happier. The Indie Community has made me feel so welcome and I can't express my gratitude enough.
- Describe your style of writing in 2 sentences or less.
Not really sure I've developed a style yet. I guess I'd say I've tried to pack as much action, gore and as many scares into my stories, no matter how long, or short they are (and I love Twists!).
- What is your favorite type of horror to write?
I really like quiet, creepy horror, whether psychological or supernatural. My latest book, Unliving Legends was my first attempt at writing zombies, and people seem to like it, so there's that.Â
- What is your favorite book or character you’ve written so far?
Of the ones that have been released, I'd say Unliving Legends is my favorite book. It's my longest, and I think the most fun. Come on, Classic Hollywood Actors rising from the dead to wreak havoc in Tinseltown? It was a blast to write! My favorite character is in my debut novel, The Stranger, which hasn't been released yet. Her name is Lorelei, and she's a bad ass Vampire Huntress.
- Who are your top 5 favorite authors?
Stephen King, John Saul, Robert McCammon, Joe Hill, and Dennis Lehane are must reads. I won't start naming indie authors, which is pretty much all I read now, because I don't want to leave anyone out.
- What most inspires you to keep writing when imposter syndrome hits the hardest?
Man, I never thought imposter syndrome was a real thing, but it sure is. What inspires me to push through it are the special friends (authors and readers) in the indie community that I've been blessed to call friends within the last 10 months.
- Is there a genre, sub-genre, or trope you’ve not written, that you’d like to try?
Yes, I haven't delved into the world of witches and witchcraft, but I think I'd like to one day.
- What is your hope for your writing career for the next five years? As in where do see yourself?
First of all, in 5 years I'll be almost 75, so I hope to see myself alive. But I don't have lofty goals as a writer, except to have as many people read and enjoy my words as possible. I can honestly say, I'm not trying to make a buck from it, I'm just fulfilling a lifelong dream, and every time someone says something nice about anything I've written, it's a feeling that I never thought I'd experience at my age.
- Pitch your current WIP in three sentences or less
My debut novel called The Stranger, is a horror western of which I'm very proud. It has gunfights, vampires, cowboys, demons, and it has heart. And I hope to release it if not by the end of 2025, then definitely by January or February, the latest.
- Where can we find you online and where can readers see you next?
My online store can be reached at jimdonohuebooks.bigcartel.com where people can get signed books, as well as shirts and hats.
My Amazon page is https://www.amazon.com/s?k=jim+donohue&crid=LZ1W35DUQX73, where they can get my eBooks either for sale, or on Kindle Unlimited.
I will be selling and signing books at the Long Island Convention of Horror from Feb 27, 2026, to March 1st.
Would love to see you all there!
