Happy Saturday! I know everyone is busy with life and the holidays, so today we're going to keep it short and sweet... maybe not sweet. Anyway, enjoy this haunted covered bridge/tunnel, notoriously known as Emily's Bridge, located in Vermont.

One of New England’s most notorious bridges resides in Stowe, VT. It was built in 1844 and is only 50 feet long. It was called Covered Bridge Road over Gold Brook but earned its name of Emily’s Bridge after tragic happenings took place.

Emily was a young woman who had a forbidden love. They were planning to elope, and this bridge was their secret meeting spot. One day, when he didn’t show up, Emily hung herself from the rafters and died.

Stories soon began circulating, but they weren’t of a girl ghost who had a broken heart; it was more of a malevolent and vengeful girl who was scorned. Marks began appearing on their backs when people would cross the bridge… allegedly. To this day, people still claim that they have scratches appear when entering the covered bridge.

There have also been claims of claw marks on the sides of cars and a super creepy voice that you can hear inside the tunnel/covered bridge.

There’s a lot of speculation on how real this story is, given that there is no record of a girl named Emily dying at the bridge before 1970. The hauntings ramped up in reports around 1948, but never with the name Emily attached. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name Emily came into play. Allegedly, a woman admitted she fabricated the story, but that wouldn’t explain the paranormal phenomena that have been captured.

According to www.vermonter.com, the following are the paranormal activities reported:

  • Phantom lights – flashing white lights with no source.

  • Disembodied voices – cries for help from an unseen woman.

  • Ghostly apparition – the form of a girl seen near the bridge.

  • Unexplained scratches on bodies and cars.

  • Dramatic temperature fluctuations.

  • Photos showing anomalies – blurry shapes, figures in the background.

  • Phantom music is heard under the bridge near Gold Brook.

  • Photos fail to develop or contain blemishes.

  • Cars' paint jobs are ruined by invisible claw marks.

  • Drivers experiencing foggy windshields with handprints.

  • Horses are avoiding the bridge, appearing with bloody gashes.
