This series will be showcased on my Patreon first, every Friday this fall and winter, through early 2026. If you are not a patron, look for the new author spotlight to appear here on the blog every Saturday! These will be for incredibly talented, but lesser known, authors that truly deserve a spotlight on their work!
As is our mission here at Uncomfortably Dark, we want to be a community support and while how we do that may change over time, we will always find a way to shed light on the many wonderfully talented people in this space. Please check out their interviews, click on their links, and check out their work for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This week's Author Spotlight is on Jon Steffens. Super funny and charming to talk to, incredibly talented and very supportive of his fellow indie authors, Jon Steffens is another author that deserves a lot more recognition than he receives. Get to know him below and check out a book or two afterwords!
MEET JON STEFFENS
1 - Introduce yourself in 4 sentences or less.
My name is Jon Steffens. I'm a horror and dark fiction author from Fort Worth, Texas.
2 - Describe your style of writing in 2 sentences or less.
I would say my work is the opposite of verbose. Not minimalist, but ordinary enough that the shocking moments often catch readers by surprise.
3 - What is your favorite type of horror to write?
It would have to be a toss-up between the nasty extreme stuff and folk horror rooted in Slavic folk themes.
4 - What is your favorite book or character you've written so far?
Melina from The God in the Hills and its sequel. Her transformation, both figurative and literal, is a wild, harrowing experience.
5 - Who are your top 5 favorite authors?
In no particular order: Brian Keene, Robert E. Howard, Joe R. Lansdale, Stephen King, and Clive Barker.
6 - What most inspires you to keep writing when imposter syndrome hits the hardest.
I just sit back and remember none of us are perfect at this, and we all doubt ourselves. I'm no different.
7 - Is there a genre, sug-genre or trope you haven't written, that you'd like to try?
Well, I'm working on a couple crime/gangster projects at the moment, and I'd love to try my hand at a classic werewolf tale.
8 - What is your hope for your writing career in the next 5 years? As in where do you see yourself?
I'd like to have 3-5 more books on the market by then. While more money would be nice, I just want more of my stuff in the world.
9 - Pitch your current WIP in three sentences or less.
I'm currently plotting an extreme horror book centered around BDSM and two crime projects that will be grisly enough for horror fans.
10 - Where can we find you online and where can readers see you next?
Though it's in desperate need of updating, visit my website jonsteffens.com or hit me up on Instagram at horror_of_82.

BIO:
Jon Steffens is the author of the Literary Nasties-winning and Splatterpunk-nominated novelette, The God in the Hills, its sequel, The God in the Hills 2: Abhorrent Flesh, and the short blast of clown-themed extremity, Kreepo. A man who’s harbored a deep love for all things horror and Halloween since childhood, Steffens lives near Fort Worth, Texas in a dilapidated shack on the outskirts of an old graveyard for cattle thieves. Not really, but it sounds cool.
