Welcome to Latham's Last Words, where I give you my last words on vintage horror books I've enjoyed. Let's look at Worms from 1979!
Not sure why I wanted to read this book, worms creep me out. But, the worm action didn't come until the last 70 pages or so.
Several murders, a nuclear power plant and lug worms taking over a small Norfolk village this was a good combination of horror and thriller.
I will say the author was able to tell a story that really didn't have a defined time period. Written in 1979, it felt like it could have happened in any year. Especially since it took place in a small English village. The only thing that could possibly be used to determine what time it took place in was the discussion about the nuclear power plant.
The main character James annoyed me for some reason. Couldn't get a feel for him. On one hand he was a bit malicious, and on the other he was a whiny wimpy guy.
I think if the worm aspect of the story had been removed this would have been a fantastic crime thriller. Or if the worm terror was amped up it would have been a great horror.
All in all, the story fell flat for me but I'm still glad I read it.
