9-15-24 Christina Critiques

Happy Sunday! We are still hanging out, chatting about graphic novels. Have you found any that you are interested in? Have any recommendations for me? Leave a comment or find me on Facebook. I’m always on the hunt for new stuff.

Let’s get deadly to start, tap into those emotions that we don’t like to talk about, then laugh it off with Deadpool, find a murder, and figure out where the body came from.

DEPRAVED HALLOWEEN

By Bryan Smith

RELEASE: October 1st, 2024

There are certain books that are automatic wins for me. Here’s my check list:

Necrophilia - check

Demons/devils/etc - check

Rednecks - check

Homages to other horror authors from long before - check

Crack whore girl fights - check *

*That one is extremely rare but nonetheless…

There is a lot happening in this novel. I can’t really even begin to tell you the synopsis but I can use some buzz words: necrophilia, jumper cables, bad cops, hostages, necrophilia, boobs, Halloween, shotguns, ropes, beheadings, and did I mention necrophilia?

I have read quite a few of Smith’s novels and this is by far this best. So much so it’s a Top 5 for this year and maybe even a Top 3. I mean, how could it NOT be? He has three different plots going and subplots and somehow they all come together making perfect sense.

If this doesn’t get the nod for a Splatterpunk nomination, I will be screaming bloody murder.

A DOUBLE HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/5.

THE ME YOU LOVE IN THE DARK

By Skottie Young

Get the Kleenex ready, you’re going to need it for this one.

After finding a rental in the middle of BFE, Ro, an artist, feels this is what she needs to have her next gallery show. The problem is, it’s rumored to be haunted. But what happens when she finds her muse and a love in something that only lets her see him in the dark?

It started out so sweet and kinda heartwarming and then BAM! not so much. The art is brilliant as are the characters and their multi-layering. I found myself falling in love the darkness as well and with Ro and her passion, isolation, and spirit. This hurts, friends, but is so cathartic.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5/5.

DEADPOOL by Joe Kelly: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

By Joe Kelly

I have watched Deadpool (only the first movie), I don’t remember it though, so I went into this only knowing he’s a wise cracking nutter.

This collection contains the first eleven issues of Deadpool and a few extras. What I liked about Deadpool is he uses humor to deflect (and really, isn’t that 100% relatable), the characters are strong and flawed, and the plot is solid. The problem that I had with it is I read it straight through with just little breaks here and there. That may have been why I grew so tired of his shenanigans so quickly.

Now saying that, I understand that the issues came out monthly (weekly?) so there were huge breaks for the original readers. I feel that some of the anticipation was lost for readers like myself.

But it was funny and at times extremely heart felt. Wade Wilson has a ton of baggage and poor Al has to deal with most of it. A definite must have for the Deadpool fan in your life.

A definite recommend 4/5.

6 SIDEKICKS OF TRIGGER KEATON

By Kyle Starks

I have to admit, I’m a Kyle Starks stan. I can’t hide it and won’t. This one had me cackling so many times.

Trigger Keaton is a well… douche canoe. An action star, Trigger has made a lot of people (mostly ex-sidekicks on his shows) angry with the way he treated them. Most do not have a positive story to tell after Keaton is found dead. Who did it? Why is there a stuntman war? Why did everyone put up with his bullshit?

Keaton is unlikeable from page one to the last page. It’s fascinating because after a few pages, I didn’t care who killed him, I wanted to know why these sidekicks came together to help solve who did. Each sidekick has a story to tell and they all paint Keaton in the worst light. An important read about hero worship and how people shouldn’t be put on pedestals.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5/5.

WHERE THE BODY WAS

By Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

Nine neighbors have their lives intertwined when a body is found by the neighborhood lookie-loo, a kid in a superhero costume. Anyone could be the killer, the girl on the run, the boy who loves her, the cop next door, or the woman he’s banging, maybe her husband, or the homeless veteran. I mean, the possibilities are endless. And who even is the dead body? So many questions to be answered.

What I loved about this one is the background stories on all the characters. They are each so flawed and engaging, even Lila, the kid in the costume. An interesting take of what happens behind closed doors and those who we think we know being anything but.

A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 5/5.
