Welcome back to another Weird Wednesday. But, for the next few months, it’s a different kind of weird. Since I’ve made a personal goal to read all 32 books that made it into this year’s Books of Horror Indie Brawl, I am going to be posting my reviews of each book until I have finished them all!
Today's review is: Stuck by Ben Young
"Each death is unique. Will you recognize when yours begins? John Camden doesn't realize he's dying, yet the physical signs are becoming more clear, and he's having recurring visions where he is trapped in a tight space. Everything changes when his best friend Robbie convinces him to go on a poorly planned caving trip as a form of immersion therapy. Soon the lines of reality blur as John finds himself lost and alone, deep underground where all is not as it seems, and the person he trusted most may have sinister intentions."
I jumped right into Stuck knowing nothing other than it being represented across social media with the flashlight emoji. I immediately loved the way it was written. You get a combination of the main character narrative mixed with passages from a book written by one of the main characters as well as passages from a book written by an opinionated paranormal debunker. I am a fan of books like this that weave stories and give out information at opportune times.
I felt like I couldn't trust John because he couldn't trust himself. And I tried to figure out what was reality and what was not. I felt really bad for him, his whole life had crumpled and things were just getting piled on. Then his best friend goes wacko on him.
I liked Lucy a lot and felt for her great loss. Her daughter was taken and murdered and she was not handling the grief well. I mean, who would? I was hoping she would start healing, or at least make it to visit her daughter's grave.
And then the two stories suddenly connect? Amazing.
I was very invested in reaching the conclusion of the story and I absolutely loved how it ended. Ben weaves an intricate tale that comes to an emotional end. This was my first book by him and I will be sure to read everything else he writes!
