SPIDERS ON A SHIP

BY STACI LAYNE WILSON

I just finished listening to this on Audible and let me start by saying this does not go how you think it might go. The title may imply something like a 'fun' horror story such as "Snakes on a Plane" or something along the lines of "Sharknado." I assure you that is not even close.

First, the synopsis:

When jealousy awakens ancient forces, a dream vacation becomes a floating nightmare.

Christopher Webb, the Amazing Spider-Mage, brings his exotic arachnid performers aboard the 1940s-themed Pacific Dream cruise for what should be a week of elegant entertainment. But beneath his stage confidence lies a secret terror—one that makes his career choice both ironic and perilous.

When Christopher catches the eye of Cleo Laveau, the ship’s mysterious psychic medium, their attraction ignites something unexpected. Cleo’s theatrical mysticism hides genuine power, and a moment of jealous rage unleashes forces neither of them understands.

Soon, passengers begin dying in impossible ways. The spiders are changing, multiplying, and coordinating with an intelligence that shouldn’t exist. As the vintage-styled cruise ship transforms into a silk-wrapped nightmare floating in the vast Pacific, the survivors face a horrifying truth: they’re not just fighting individual creatures anymore.

With communications severed and escape routes sealed, Christopher and Cleo must confront what they’ve awakened before it spreads beyond the ship. But some secrets run deeper than performance, some curses can’t be easily broken, and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there's nowhere left to hide.

Second, my very high praise:

As I was saying, the title may imply that this story might be a bit more fun, maybe humorous or more satirical but no, my friend, not at all. This was one of the best stories that I have read in a long time featuring the eight-legged horrors that me cringe every time I see one. The premise was excellent; the story focuses on a vintage cruise on a ship in which everyone stays in character while a most horrible chain of events is set off while they are miles from land.

The premise alone was fun and highly creative. 1940's era, week-long, costume party, so to speak. The decor was described in high detail, the language being used was spot on, and the cast of characters, extraordinarily executed. Add in a magician called 'The Spider Mage', a fortune teller, an entitled influencer, a pair of aged magicians, and hundreds of mostly wealthy passengers there to indulge in fantasy, nostalgia and an authentic experience into the past, and you have a perfect recipe for disaster of epic proportions.

When things begin to unfold, gradually at first, before escalating into fear-fueled chaos, the perfectly polite passengers turn feral with fear, and a mystery ensues as the mage and the fortune, and the captain try to figure out just what the hell is going on. This is a truly chilling story with a slew of moments so terrorizing and creepy that I found myself slapping at spiders that I only imagined were crawling up my arms, and my legs, and down my back... you get the idea.

But with all that said, at no point does this story devolve into 'funny' horror, this stays seriously creepy, full of imagery that will make your blood run cold, and enough spiders to make you sleep with the lights on.

Get it, get the book, get the audio (which was excellent) but just get it!
