The Sorrowstones
by Felix Blackwell
The story follows a young man by the name of Cole Graves throughout his life from pre-teen to young adulthood and the many bizarre incidents that seem to follow him, his friends, and his family. It starts innocently enough, an illness that clears up without any explanation, anxiety attacks relieved, both after he receives what seem to be innocent but random trinkets. Elaborately carved animal shapes of stone and wood that are gifted to him at various times of his life.
As tragedy after tragedy occurs either within his home or those close by, Cole begins to wonder if they may be something more to these gifts he’s been given. As he begins searching for the truth, the more the lives of his loved ones unravel, but can he discover the secret before it’s too late to save anyone at all?
Overall, this was a solid concept and an enjoyable story. The friendships between the characters felt real as did the challenges of middle school and high school as the kids traversed those periods of time. The family dynamics worked well too, evolving as needed with the ebb and flow of the story. My only drawback was I felt as if the final resolution was drawn out a little too long but it still provided a strong conclusion to a horrifyingly tragic tale.
Highly recommend to lovers of quiet horror, grief horror, and coming of age stories.
