The Shepherd of the Black Sheep by Kristopher Triana is an absolutely haunting, slow-burn psychological tale that gets oppressively darker with every turn of the page.
Tom Hardgrave is a rancher, a widower, and a man who has already endured more loss than anyone should. But when his daughter and son-in-law die, and he's left with his 10-year-old granddaughter Paige, trying becomes the only thing that matters. What starts as a story about two people navigating unimaginable grief becomes something far more unsettling after Paige's best friend is found murdered in the woods. Suddenly, Tom isn't just trying to keep his granddaughter afloat—he's trying to protect her from whatever darkness crept into their lives that day in the snow.
Most people probably know Triana for the outright brutality he brings to extreme horror, but don't expect to find that here. Instead of blood and guts and gore, prepare for a slow, painful splitting of your heart. The emotions seep in, one quiet, devastating moment at a time, and even though you know where things are going, trust me when I say it doesn't make it hurt any less.
