BRIAN ASMAN JOINS US ON LAUNCH DAY TO DISCUSS HIS VIRAL CULT HIT NOVELLA "MAN, F*CK THIS HOUSE (AND OTHER DISASTERS)!"
MAN, F*CK THIS HOUSE! Became a huge success when it was first released. Can you tell us what was the catalyst for writing this particular story?
It started as a Twitter joke. I was like, “You know what would be a really great title for a haunted house story?” A bunch of people seemed to dig it, so I just went for it. The other elements of the book were drawn from a number of places. There are certain things about the house, the crawlspace in the basement for example, that are directly inspired by the house I lived in my junior year of college. And the genesis of the relationship between Damien and Sabrina was an entry in the early-00s coffee-table book Post Secret, which was a collection of anonymous secrets submitted by random people. One of them was “I love one of my children.”
Which character was your favorite to write? Which one was the most difficult?
Damien, for sure. The other central POV, Sabrina, also came pretty naturally. I suppose Michaela was a little tougher, in that she’s a side character and I wanted to share her perspective, but I wasn’t always sure I was giving her enough to do.
What was the hardest scene to write?
Honestly, none. The first draft of this book took six weeks. Editing, both the first time around and in this new version, was a breeze. Not that I don’t struggle all the time, but this particular book just flowed naturally.
This new edition includes six other stories, including ‘In The Rushes,” “Razor Bill,” and “Seven Years.” What made you want to do a new edition and make it a collection rather than an author’s preferred standalone edition?
To give the reader more bang for their buck, really. If I’m asking you to buy another version of a book you already own, I want to make it worth your while, and between the new content in MFTH, the additional stories, and the new formats (HC and audio), I’m hoping we’ll be able to attract some current fans in addition to brand-new readers.
Of the six included stories, do you have a favorite story or character? If so, which one and why?
There’s stuff I love about all of them, but I think “Line of Sight” is definitely one of my favorites. I love writing—and reading—crime. Getting to blend that genre with horror was super fun for me.
Out of all your books (or story), which one was the most fun to write and why?
I always think writing’s the most fun you can have with pants on, and pants are not actually required. But if I had to pick one, it’s my 2021 novella Nunchuck City. It’s a balls-to-the-wall ninja action comedy inspired by all the things I loved as a kid, from Ninja Turtles to Double Dragon and a billion other things. But it’s also got a lot of heart and characters who I truly wish could be my IRL friends. If I could write in one universe for the rest of my life, that’s the one I would pick, no question about it.
And which book (or story) was the hardest, and tell us a little about why?
Probably Our Black Hearts Beat As One, because it was very personal, and I was still going through a really rough patch when I wrote it.
If you could pitch this collection in ten words or less, what would you say?
I owe some very scary guys a lot of money.
Along the same lines, if you could pitch just one story to a major film studio, in just three lines, what story and what is your pitch?
Well, luckily, three of the stories have been optioned already. My best pitch is for “Line of Sight.” It’s The Shield meets Supernatural when an elite squad of crooked cops runs headlong into a bizarre—and possibly inhuman--killer. There are hints at a larger world, and it’s the kind of concept I can see going for 4-5 seasons easily.
Speaking of film, is there a possibility of a movie for “Man, F*ck This House” in the future?
We’ve sold the film rights twice now, and there is a project in development, yes. Fingers crossed!
What was the best compliment you have received with your writing?
Several women have told me that they really loved Sabrina as a character, because there are things they feel they aren’t allowed to say—or even think—when it comes to being a parent, and they really appreciated seeing that depicted in a book. That really meant a lot to me.
What is one thing on your author bucket list?
So many! I would really like to write comics for either Marvel or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe.
What three books should everyone read and why?
Books are so personal, there’s so many of them, so I don’t have three books everyone should read. But I think everyone should:
1. Read books that they want to read
2. Read books that challenge them
3. Read books in new genres
What was your last 5-star read and why?
So many bangers this year, but Carl’s Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman. That series is so freaking fun!
Are there upcoming projects that you could give us a bit of a sneak peek of?
Yes, I am hard at work on my next novel now, The Ghost Who Said “Boo!”, which is going to be the scariest book ever written. You heard it here first!
Is there anything else that we did not mention here that you would like to tell your readers about?
