MAN, F*CK THIS HOUSE (AND OTHER DISASTERS)

By Brian Asman

OK! Holy short story collection, Batman! Asman is a hell of a horror writer, and it shows. This entire book was phenomenal from cover to cover. I truly enjoyed every single story in this collection. There isn’t a horror reader I wouldn’t suggest this to. I have now found yet another new-to-me author that has become an auto-buy.

This is a fairly lengthy collection, so I’ll highlight the main story, or what I consider the main story, and then provide quotes from each of the other stories!

MAN, F*CK THIS HOUSE

“Ghosts didn’t exist, and if they did, they certainly didn’t concern themselves with bored college dropouts who couldn’t accept the fact they’d accidentally become homemakers.”

I have a love/hate relationship with this story. I know that sounds weird, but it’s how it should be. This story is wild, lol. In all the best ways. It gave me HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE vibes in the sense that I LOVED the plot, but some of the characters were incredibly annoying and unlikable. Flat out dumb in ways, lol. That being said, it’s something I love so much because that’s exactly how they were supposed to be curated. This story was truly so much fun, and sitting at just under 200 pages, it’s the perfect length and one I totally binged out in a day!

BEWARE THE HURLYBURLY

“I know Sixty Minutes made us look like assholes—worse, simple assholes—but the thing is, I’m not stupid.”

SEVEN YEARS

“Just my luck, he thought. I finally meet someone and she’s goddamn cursed.”

IN THE RUSHES

“And sometimes, just sometimes, you’ll feel someone pass you, and as they do, you’ll hear a name on the wind. Most times, it won’t mean a thing to you, unless you look in the papers the next day.”

RAZOR BILL

“So other than the Wild West show and the gas station/diner, the only other thing of interest was the haunted outhouse. I know what you’re thinking, all kinds of shitty jokes running through your head, but here’s the thing:

Yes, it was an honest-to-goodness outhouse, built way back when that dumbass, sunburned Aussie looked around at a patch of dirt and said, Crikey, someone ought to put a town here.”

LINE OF SIGHT

“He was terrified of disappointing Hailee. Of her remembering him as some asshole she’d dated in a weaker moment, a goddamn monstrous example of masculinity, toxic as fuck, mutated into a hateful, violent sack of shit. After all, the whole world thought so.”

THE TIRE SWING

“Our personal definitions of 'old' are fungible. And if we are not old, we must still be young. Yet we all cross that Rubicon eventually, even if we can’t pinpoint the precise moment the summer of our lives ended.”

As I said above, all of the stories in this collection are an easy 10/10 for me. You really get a full range of tropes, etc., here. Everything from doppelgängers to Western. It’s extremely well-rounded and brilliantly written.

Synopsis:

This all-new expanded edition of the viral sensation Man, F*ck This House includes six brand-new stories by Brian Asman, “a singular voice in horror fiction” (Eric LaRocca).

In the titular Man, F*ck This House, Sabrina Haskins and her family have just moved into their dream home. At first glance, the house is perfect. But things aren’t what they seem. Sabrina is hearing odd noises, seeing strange visions. Their neighbors are odd or absent. And Sabrina’s already-fraught relationship with her son is about to be tested in a way no parent could ever imagine. Because while the Haskins family might be the newest owners of this house, they’re far from its only residents …

In “Beware the Hurlyburly,” a troubled teen loses his grip on reality after checking out the wrong internet meme …

In “In the Rushes,” a coastal cycling trip turns terrifying for a feuding mother and daughter …

Malevolent doppelgängers, bizarre murders, ancient evils, Western ghosts, mirror monsters, poisonous playthings, and more populate the pages of this brilliant—and petrifying—collection of stories.

This book releases on October 7th and can be preordered using the link below!

THE DESECRATION OF SAINT AGATHA

By Jessa Riot

“Perhaps she is lost in the memory of that divine glory, or maybe she is revisiting the suffering she endured for that fleeting moment of rapture. Either way, her porcelain form bears no witness to the perversion unfolding before her, and she will never tell.”

This story was incredible. I could have read a thousand more pages of this writing style and not have batted an eye. I don’t usually compliment the interior design of books, but I really enjoyed this one. I loved the beginning, where there’s a playlist to go with the book. Right down to both the Apple and Spotify links.

Then the story? Incredible. Brutal. Wild body horror. But it’s told in such a unique and beautiful way. At the end, I read the author’s note and couldn’t help but find it so relatable; perhaps that’s why I am obsessed with this story, but I honestly think anyone would love it. Especially those who favor religious horror and/or body horror. It’s also a nice, quick read. Easy to read in one sitting. I cannot promote this book enough. There’s definitely a reason it’s sitting at the top of the Godless charts. This is another new to me author that I will be both binge-reading and keeping my eye out for. OBSESSED.

Synopsis:

Faith. Flesh. Sacrifice.

Faith. Flesh. Sacrifice.

Sister Mallory has spent her life in devotion—but devotion is not enough. The whispers of Saint Agatha call to her, demanding more. More discipline. More pain. More proof of faith.

As the lines between ecstasy and agony blur, Mallory’s descent becomes inevitable. Visions of martyrdom consume her. Her body becomes an altar. Her suffering, a prayer.

But when the fires of devotion burn too hot, when the flesh fails before the spirit, will she find salvation—or something far more unholy?

A blasphemous descent into religious horror, transgressive erotica, and visceral body horror, from the author of Father Forgive Me.

ON THE SLAB

By Perry Palling

“My drug cocktail — that had been untested until today — is working exactly as intended from what I can see. The monotony of cold clammy orifices has left me eager to experiment, though I’ve grown use to the other conveniences of a dead lover. Paralysis seems an appropriate compromise.”

OH, I LOVED THIS ONE! This story is quick, about 16 pages. So, it’s really hard to do any sort of lengthy review without giving anything away. But it’s giving Jeffrey Dahmer meets mortician meets their match. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I REALLY hope it does because I would love to see this one being talked about more. I have never heard of this author. Yet another new to me author, but one that I will be staking out and see what I can find more of because heck yes, 10/10. Need more in my life asap!!

Synopsis:

A miscalculated dose of a paralyzing drug turns the tables on a perverse mortician mid-embalming as his victim takes revenge.
