This series will be showcased on my Patreon first, every Friday this fall and winter, through early 2026. If you are not a patron, look for the new author spotlight to appear here on the blog every Saturday! These will be for incredibly talented, but lesser known, authors that truly deserve a spotlight on their work!
As is our mission here at Uncomfortably Dark, we want to be a community support and while how we do that may change over time, we will always find a way to shed light on the many wonderfully talented people in this space. Please check out their interviews, click on their links, and check out their work for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This week's spotlight is on author L. Stephenson, an indie author that I became aware of just over the last year. I was lucky enough to read an early copy of his upcoming novella, THE BOY AT NO. 9 WHITLOCK. It's really something special and I hope you all will go check it out when it releases.
MEET L. STEPHENSON!
- Introduce yourself in 4 sentences or less.
Hi, I’m L. Stephenson and I’m a horror author of releases such as The Boatmore Butcher and When Strange Things Bite: A Collection of Short Stories. Last year I curated and edited Violent Advents: A Christmas Horror Anthology for charity, with all royalties going to the British Heart Foundation and the American Heart Association.
- Describe your style of writing in 2 sentences or less.
While drawing from real life experience and my nightmares, I try to make the best of every line and prefer each sentence and paragraph to have a good reading rhythm to it.
- What is your favorite type of horror to write?
I have enjoyed writing stories with a suspenseful slasher-esque edge but have since switched to incorporating a mixture of sub-genres, such as psychological and supernatural.
- What is your favorite book or character you’ve written so far?
My favorite book I’ve written is my novella, The Boy at No. 9 Whitlock. And favorite character that I’ve written is the killer from my novel, The Boatmore Butcher.
- Who are your top 5 favorite authors?
My top 5 favourite authors are Caroline B. Cooney, Richard Laymon, Clive Barker, Stephen King, and R. L. Stine.
- What most inspires you to keep writing when imposter syndrome hits the hardest?
I feel like I’ve been lucky enough to grow into the writer I want to be, so my imposter syndrome can sometimes stem from my past works. But when that happens, I talk with close writer friends about how I’m feeling and remind myself how far I’ve come personally as a writer.
- Is there a genre, sub-genre, or trope you’ve not written, that you’d like to try?
I do keep threatening to write a slasher spoof! So, I would like to try that.
- What is your hope for your writing career for the next five years? As in where do you see yourself?
I hope to have at least one big solo release a year, preferably published through a press.
- Pitch your current WIP in three sentences or less
My current WIP is Creepshow / Tales from the Crypt meets The Fall of the House of Usher.
- Where can we find you online and where can readers see you next?
The best place to find me online is my Instagram page: @lstephensonauthor – or on my linktree with leads to my most current releases. You can next find my writing in Poisoned Soup for the Macabre, Depraved, & Insane: An Anthology of Nostalgic Terrors from Brigids Gate Press which is set for release in December of this year.
