Welcome to Latham's Last Words, where I give you my last words on books I've enjoyed. Today I have two reviews for you. Out Of The Drowning Deep by A. C. Wise and Monkey Bones by Rob Smales.
Out of the Drowning Deep by A.C. Wise
What do an angel, an outdated automaton and a recovering drug addict have in common? They're all trying to solve the mystery of the Pope's murder. But the mystery is just the mechanism to being these three together. A sci-fi religious cosmic horror with nuns resembling angler fish, you're getting more than you bargain for.
From Quin's struggles with sobriety and his relationship with the angel Murmuration to Scribe IV's longing to not be seen as something blasphemous and Angel's desire for friendship, these characters are so complex and so full of internal torment you can't help but become attached to them.
This was my first time reading a book that used neo pronouns and at first it was a bit hard to wrap my mind around, but I quickly adapted. Since Angel has no defined gender the author used xe/xem when referring to that character.
A wondrously terrible future where gods and demons have been revealed, I was not prepared for the depth of emotions I felt while reading.

Monkey Bones by Rob Smales
It's not every day that I can say a horror book was a delightful read. Well, today is the day and this is the book. Is it creepy and suspenseful? Absolutely. But there's just enough dry humor to make me chuckle pretty much in every chapter.
Poor Tom just wants to do his job, but he gets sucked into some supernatural goings on at a senior citizen housing complex.
I bought this solely for the cover and when I started reading I could not put it down! If I didn't have adult responsibilities I would have finished it in one sitting.
With minimal foul language, gore that's not over the top and no sexual situations, I think this would be a great book for older teens.
A great book that I wish I could read for the first time all over again!
