New reviewer Danielle Yvonne is back this week proving why she's earned her spot on the Uncomfortably Dark Team. This week, she tore through Godless like a kid tearing through presents on Christmas morning.

Three of those short but brutal reads made her review list this week! Check those out below and be sure to come back next Saturday to see what she devours next!

Playing Hooky

By Jessica Gleason

One of my favorite parts about going into books blind is “guessing” what I’m getting myself into based on the title, cover, author, etc.… and then being totally wrong and still blown away by what I just read. And this was one of those times.

Weather Horror (is that a term?) usually isn’t my go to, but damn… this was a REALLY good story! Gleason pulled through every element to make a damn good read. The characters, their development, their dialogue, the back and forth chapters, the tone, the vibe, the overall story. I mean really, everything.

So hear me out, lol. If any of you watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and remember the episode where the gang gets quarantined… this is what the story reminds me of. But add supernatural weather events, a lot of death, blood and gore. A tiny bit of romance and a plot twist at the end that’ll leave your jaw dropped.

Once again, I found another five star read from Godless. And this is definitely one I recommend to all horror readers who are looking for a fast paced really good story that’s unhinged without being over the top.

Terror at Back Woods Lodge

By Eddie Generous

“How could anyone live out here in all this uncertainty? Any one of those knot eyes she spotted—or rather, imagined spotting—could be a grizzly bear, a mountain lion, a goddamned hillbilly.”

I have no idea how this book has been sliding under the radar because it was really freaking good. Like needs to be spammed about and added to everyone’s TBR asap.

So a group of divorced artists go on a retreat at this camp that just reopened in the middle of nowhere…what could possibly go wrong?!

There’s a lot of characters but it’s done in a way that’s easy to keep up and not fall off course. There’s also an absolutely unhinged creature that’s wreaking havoc on the people / the police and anyone who stands in the way. Then the ending… the ending caught me off guard. And I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. So I’ve been sitting here for a couple days trying to come up with a review. And I realized that clearly… if days later… I’m STILL thinking about this story and all the details etc, that it could only mean one thing. It was a damn good one.

Run to Godless now and grab this hidden gem. Then shout it from the rooftops because I’d love to see this author and story get more love!!

The Call Center

By Matt Micheli

“Either eat or become eaten.”

I’m sure we’ve all dealt with one or hundreds of unhinged telemarketers in our lifetime. And if their workplace is anything like this call center… I fully understand why.

This short story sits pretty at around 30 pages, but don’t let that fool you. Micheli is one hell of a story teller and The Call Center highlights that.

I have to keep this review slightly short so I don’t let out any spoilers, but I will say… be careful eating from the workplace cafeteria. No matter how good the food seems.

Grab is gem on Godless now!!
