THICK AS A BRICK
By: Craig Brownlie
This was such a unique collection for me and I loved it. 10 poems and 9 short stories are jam packed into this 100ish page collection and they’re all bangers!!
There’s no way I could possibly go through each story / poem one by one without ruining plots etc, so I’m really asking you to trust me on this one, lol.
You get so many different themes and a huge range with this collection. Besides the poems which were great, there’s stories involving cosmic horror, politics, holidays (Halloween), writers block (I LOVED this story), and everything in between. It’s really well rounded and the representation is loud and proud in the best ways possible.
Oh, and the cover by Don Noble? Amazing per always.
I also love that this is available on both Godless and Amazon so I highly recommend every horror reader who is looking for something different, take a chance on this one!
A DEATH AT THE OFFICE (part 1)
By: Frank J. Edler
“You had to be a horrible brat to be in charge of Limbo. It's the place where underperforming Deaths were sent when they were no longer of any use to The League of Deaths. In order to send Death to a place where they would never want to go, it had to be downright intolerable.”
Being dead is a tough job. Being a Grim Reaper, especially a branch manager, well that can be downright tough on some days! And purgatory?! Stay far away!
I love a clever author. In under 50 pages it was made clear as day that Frank Edler is one hell of a clever author. I LOVED this short story. So much so that once I finished, I raced to go grab the next two books in this series.
I smirked so many times reading this. It was a binge in one sitting book and like I said above, so freaking clever! The attention to detail was top tier. Biggest chefs kiss imaginable. I love seeing this writing style, especially when someone can pull it off in a shorter story. The characters were fantastic. The plot was witty. And overall, this entire thing was a super solid read. Easy five stars. Probably more.
Grab it on Godless asap!
SACRILEGE
By: Barbara Avon
“What would happen if I could record your dreams? Would you show me the best parts of yourself? Would I see you skipping from cloud to cloud, or would you be sharing tea with Satan? Defying all logic, I want to see inside your head and discover the ugliest parts of you.”
Sacrilege is probably one of the most well written horrors I’ve read so far this year. The words feel poetic. The details used for both the characters and environment are unmatched in many ways and make you feel like you’re right there watching it all unfold.
I actually really loved the religious vibe, and the characters alongside their development were both heartbreaking and relatable in ways. This was a read in one day book for me and it’s about 150 pages. Definitely a page turner while still keeping a pretty bleak vibe throughout.
Themes of alcoholism and depression with a ton of guilt mixed in can make for one hell of a horror story… and Avon absolutely nailed it.
Easy five stars with the highest of recommendations. Grab it on Amazon now!
