Sonja Ska Reviews 'The Monster of Elendhaven,' 9/19/2024

The Monster of Elendhaven by Jessica Giesbrecht is a masterclass in world-building. The descriptions are as vivid as they are poetic, transporting you to a world dripping with urban decay, the perfect backdrop for our protagonist's story.

This is a story about suffering and revenge. About dark hearts and cruel worlds - but nestled between the darkness, betrayal, and lies are moments of tenderness that manage to a small ray of light into the deep, deep shadows. Even with the softer, even funny moments, The Monster of Elendhaven never forgets that it's ultimately a twisted little nightmare impossible to escape.

The Monster of Elendhaven is perfect for lovers of the macabre, who love a little fantasy mixed into their horror. If you're into Penny Dreadful or Dark Souls, you'll feel perfectly at home with this atmospheric, grimy Victorian based horror. The only disappointing thing about this book is that Giesbrecht didn't have a second book for me to dive right into. Get it here!
