SPECIAL REPORT - Christina Critiques - GenreBlast Film Festival 2026: Part 6
Title: THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF AIR
Directed by: Shayna Connelly
Country: US Run Time: 16 minutes
Synopsis: When Lauren witnessed a tragedy, she has to question everything she holds dear.
Favorite line: “Desire doesn’t fade with age… or marital status.”
Thoughts: This short is so damn well done. Between the vulnerability the FMC portrays to the realization that photos truly only tell one half of a story that is a millisecond in time. The viewer walks away with heaviness and more questions for themselves than they probably thought would be in a 16 minute film.
Actor to watch for: Lauren - Jessica Dean Turner
Title: HALLOWEEN BIRD
Directed by: Dean Bertram
Country: US Run Time: 6 mins
Synopsis: An All Hallow’s Eve turns potentially deadly when an unwelcome visitor knocks on the door.
Favorite line: “Not worth it.”
Thoughts: Ugh, I hate birds. But! I put my personal prejudices to the side to watch this amazing short. The young lady, Chloe Bertram, was phenomenal! With the deaf/hard of hearing representation, it draws you into the story more because you worry for her. The play on Little Red Riding Hood was well done as well. Stellar from beginning to end.
Actor to watch for: Girl - Chloe Bertram
Title: ON BROKEN GLASS
Directed by: Timothy Troy
Country: US Run Time: 10 mins
Synopsis: A man must atone for his sins against a woman… but it’s not going to be easy.
Favorite line: “Oh, wait. Your text said naked.”
Thoughts: Fuck. Seriously. Troy makes the viewer hurt emotionally as well as phantom pains. The way the woman stays so stoic while the man tries to play it cool, absolutely effortless. What we, the viewers, are left with at the end is - did he deserve the atonement opportunity?
Actor to watch for: Woman - Hannah Efsits
A TOP TEN TO WATCH
Title: PROXY
Directed by: Diana Porter and Mikel Wisler
Country: US Run Time: 15 mins
Synopsis: Clyde and Renata are trying to spice up their life… the problem is one of them needs someone else to be alive.
Favorite line: “I bought condoms.”
Thoughts: Porter and Wisler… when I see their names on a project, I know I’m in for some heavy commentary and a week of existential spiraling. With PROXY, the line unblurs consent, corporations and the shady practices, and how far one goes for the ones they love. I will warn you, this one hurts and will stay with you long after the end credits.
Actor to watch for: Renata - Lia Lockhart and Alora - Jean-Marie Neave
Personal note: BEST SHORT OF THE FESTIVAL
Title: EEOHTOH
Directed by: Matthew Barber and Nathaniel Barber
Country: US Run Time: 8 mins
Synopsis: A mother must face the truth in the tragedy that befell her but not before confronting the evil that did it.
Favorite line: “Tell our child, I’ll be home soon.”
Thoughts: Talk about an opening scene of the mother with her wounds, wowzer. The switch from black and white to color adds so much to the atmosphere of the film. A mother’s revenge is felt throughout Etta’s performance and it is brilliant. My favorite part is the “what happened” and “what started her journey”.
Actor to watch for: Etta - Sable Griedel
Title: OPALESCENT
Directed by: Liz Mealey
Country: US Run Time: 3 mins
Synopsis: Opal lives a drab, possibly boring life until she realizes life can be a bit more magical in the laundromat.
Favorite line: N/A
Thoughts: I loved the simplistic whimsy of OPALESCENT. You see the skirt and think, OK. But then, then it starts to make sense and I found myself smiling along with the actors. It was so infectious. Beautifully shot and relatable, this is one to watch out for.
Actor to watch for: Opal - Ari Kraiman and Alon - Caleb Aaron
