THE SPITE HOUSE
By Johnny Compton
THE SPITE HOUSE is an incredible haunted house story with more hidden in its layers than one may expect at first glance. A house built out of spite, long ago, that still carries the stains of its past and haunts the town it looms over. Rumors abound, but in whispers, no one willing to risk the wrath of Eunice, the millionaire matriarch of the town.
Eric is a quiet man with a secret, traveling town to town with his two daughters, seeking work and somewhere safe to settle. Des, the oldest of the girls, shares part of the burden, caring for her sister and taking on the odd job when she can. When Eric sees an ad for a rather strange job, but a job that offers a place to stay and a healthy sum of money, he knows he cannot miss the opportunity to try for it, no matter how strange the request is.
The road takes Eric straight to the home of Eunice, where she tells him the history behind the Spite House, and the land it sits on, by way of explanation. In exchange, Eric tells her a story that solidifies why he’s the man for the job, despite him not being able to explain much more about himself. Eunice agrees to take him on for the job and Eric and his girls find themselves the newest tenants of The Spite House.
Compton weaves a story filled with grief, sorrow, family secrets, and shows what can happen when the very house you live in absorbs the hate that built it. An excellent listen on Audible and a captivating read.
