When The Wolf Comes Home
By Nat Cassidy
This shit right here…
It’s been a long time since a book threw me off course so badly that I almost put it down.
Yes, I heard all the hype.
Yes, I heard all about how much readers loved it.
Yes, I assumed from the title that I had a mild clue of what it might be about, so naturally went in blind, with only my assumption, and got surprised by the biggest ‘F you and your assumption’ about one third of the way in.
That sharp right turn, that told me how wrong I was about what I thought I was reading, nearly made me close the book. Not upset about being wrong, but so disturbed by exactly what happened that my brain folded in on itself for a few seconds.
This is also the moment that I knew I would not be sleeping until I finished the book. I love when that happens in a story, a moment so unexpected that you can’t help but stop and wonder, ‘WTF am I reading and is this still the same story?’
I could discuss tropes, or themes, or the cinematic quality of the storyline and its imagery. I could wax poetic about its emotional depths, hidden ties to family dynamics, hidden trauma, and unprocessed fears, but I won’t.
This is a hell of a story. Go explore it for yourself. With ZERO assumptions. You may think you know what you’re in for.
You. Are. Wrong.
