Today's breakdown is for the audiobook of "In The Tall Trees" by Angel Van Atta:
A heavy, and potentially triggering, book that follows a little girl and her family who are imprisoned by an evil and abusive man. The story is told from the child's point of view as she starts to realize that her safe reality is actually a total nightmare. The way it was written was perfect for a very young narrator and felt genuine to me. By time this dark tale gets really intense, you're gonna know for sure if you side with empathy or apathy. I was on the edge of my seat but did feel that the ending was predictable, although the outcome I expected I am glad is not the one we get. I'm very curious what the sequel will be like and plan to jump in that one very soon! I found the why behind why this was happening pretty frightening and hope the second one delves in that a little more and puts an end to it.
The audio portion was narrated by Laura Greaves who made it feel as if a child was actually retelling the events. Her little enunciation and everything were on point and made for a compelling listen.Â
4/5 stars.
