Today's breakdown is for "Hannibal Rising" by Thomas Harris:

I am well aware that my opinion here falls into the minority category, but I actually quite enjoyed this prequel. I think it gives Lecter a more practical reason for becoming what he does and in turn I feel that it sort of diminishes his mysteriousness, but it also sort of plays to the same theme that we get from the series overall that shows us how deep hurt in the younger years can create a horrific monster later on in life. I think this is a solid revenge tale and I really don't understand the criticism it seems to take from fans of the other books. I recommend it highly - even if you only read it to enjoy reading about a few nazis getting their due. If you've been eyeing this one and are putting it off, I assure you it is worth picking up.

4/5 stars.
