Welcome to Latham's Last Words, where I give you my last words on books I've enjoyed. It's AAPI Heritage month and I would be remiss on featuring my all time favorite werewolf novel, Moon Dance by SP Somtow.

Moon Dance

Set in 1900's America, this is an immersive read that delves not only into the European lore of the werewolf, but indigenous werewolf lore. The combination of the two make for one of the most brilliantly written werewolf stories ever.

As soon as I started reading, I was instantly captivated and could not put this book down. I have read it 4 times since I first read in the 90's. Each time I find more to love, not only about the story and characters, but the author's writing style as well.

Lush descriptions of the time period it takes place in really transports you back in time. Somtow did a fantastic job not only of keeping the time period alive, but also featuring the Lakota Sioux tribe of the Shungmanitu in a way that doesn't make them seem like base savages.

I can not get enough of this book and will recommend it every time I see someone looking for werewolf stories.

Get it here!

While you can get recently republished editions, if you want the original edition from 1989 that will be a hard search and I suggest trying Thriftbooks or eBay.
