Today's breakdown is for "The Silence Of The Lambs" by Thomas Harris:
Another revisit I couldn't wait to get through again, I found this one no less charming than I did the initial read through. While I personally relate to, and prefer, Red Dragon slightly more, I still really adore this story - my main disconnect is that I don't really relate to Starling in any way other than her love for animals. She's still such a strong character and I like that she allows us to get better glimpses of the brilliance and ferocity of Hannibal. One thing that makes reading this (as well as Red Dragon) better to read than to watch is the fact that we get a deeper understanding of the main villain because of their pasts being better explained. While I don't feel as empathetic towards Buffalo Bill as I do Francis Dolarhyde, I still feel like I "get" his character more by reading about him - especially in relation to his love for moths. Speaking of, who knew a moth could be so temperamental... they're fiesty all throughout this book! If I had any complaint it would be a minor one and it would be that what was found in the basement is never explicitly described, but it hardly takes anything away from such a masterpiece. As always with reading Thomas Harris, I feel a little smarter just by exploring what he writes on his pages and I love when fiction is able to educate. I truly do love the entire Lecter series, very much so. You should open one up and find out why...
5/5 stars.
