Today's breakdown is for the audiobook of "The Best Of Intentions" by Joshua MacMillan:
I had this book for a long time and finally read it as it was a much anticipated title based off of the buzz it created when it was released. The story was a bit of a slow burn integrated with an ominous countdown and segments of horrifying nightmares that seemed to keep foreshadowing what the ending would be. As the main character spirals into a paranoid madness, we follow his internal struggles with war guilt and his masking with alcohol and denial that he needs to seek psychiatric help. What we are left with is a very sad tale that serves as a warning about mental health, and a mysterious countdown with notes that stay an enigma. Some strong writing here, I think that MacMillan is a gifted writer, but this ending was too depressing for any enjoyment to be found in the plot.
The audio portion was performed by Eddie James who I had to slow down a tad to keep up with his pace, but otherwise did a really good job.
3/5 stars.
