Welcome to Latham's Last Words, where I give you my last words on books I've enjoyed. It's Women in Horror Month and I wanted to start off with Flowers For The Sea by Zin E. Rocklyn.

Going through my books I found this one and I can't remember when or where I got it, but I'm so glad I did! I enjoyed it very much. The author brought you right into the world they created from the first page. How life on the ship was described and how the characters adapted to that life made me wish this was a movie.

A combination of dystopian, nautical and cosmic horror, with a bit of gothic fantasy, the vibrant words leap off the page and bring you into a world unlike anything you've ever encountered. A whole community living on a boat, it gives vibes of Noah's Ark since the community is fleeing from a flood.

I really enjoyed how the author was able to convey how a caste system was created by the inhabitants of the boat, with the main character Iraxi ostracized and forced to live in the bowels of the ship. Simply because she's pregnant. The inhabitants treated her as a miracle, and also as something to be feared. They were terrified of what the birth of her child would mean, but they also had hope that the birth of her child meant salvation.

I've never read anything like this before and it blew my mind how immersive the story was. Highly recommend!
