Welcome to Latham's Last Words, where I give you my last words on books I've enjoyed. This week's review is another Halloween read, Mischief Night Massacre by Jason Parent. An amazingly spooky collection of Halloween stories.

What can I say other than this collection of Halloween horror should be on everyone's reading list for spooky season. Ten stories that bring Halloween to life. The stories are the perfect sampling of creature features, slashers, supernatural horror and cosmic horror. There's a little bit of something for lovers of all horror sub-genres.

My two favorites are:

Dia De Los Muertos is a heartbreaking story of a soldier with PTSD. From the present in Mexico to the past in Khandahar, you learn how he ended up living in squalor being shunned by the locals. But he has a secret. I really enjoyed watching how life for Russell unraveled due to his PTSD. My heart broke for him.

Pulp is the longest story in this collection. A motley group of horror loving high school students go to an out of the way farm for their annual Halloween party, I'm sure you can guess things don't go that well. An excellent cast, a twisty turny storyline, and a little bit supernatural it's a fun ride. If there isn't a continuation of this story I'm going to be so upset!

This is a great collection to read while bundled up, watching the flames flicker in your Jack O'Lantern and listening to the calls of "Trick or Treat!".
