Rachel Schommer Reviews: 1.27.25

I'm drastically under-read in some of the pillars of horror (Smith, Laymon, McCammon) so I'm trying to remedy that while also trying to read new works from all of my current favorite authors.

HOUSE OF BLOOD by Bryan Smith

1. I found this enjoyable. Was it the best book I’ve ever read? No, but it also wasn’t the worst. I’ve only read one other of Bryan Smith’s books, so I really can’t say where I think this one falls in the ranking of his whole body of work, but I kept picking it up to see what was going on with Dream and friends, so it at least snagged me and kept me interested throughout.

2. The plot was a little odd for me in that it felt a little like a mash up between Bentley Little and some of the dark romance books I’ve read as of late, but again, I thought it worked! That said, if you don’t like sex with your horror, maybe skip this one.

3. I typically like my books to have a bit more character development, but I felt the storyline and plot was strong enough to make up for what lacked in that department. Our MC, Dream, is…interesting. She seems a little whiny at times, especially toward the beginning. Then you realize she’s kind of going through it and her personality becomes a bit more understandable. Throughout the book there’s allusions to her being stronger than she realizes, however I felt like the payoff wasn’t exactly there; she never really proved it. All in all, I didn’t find her to be a totally dislikable character though; just flawed. A redeeming quality is that there are some super interesting side characters, whom I actually really grew to like.

4. This was, to me, an interesting take on the pleasure of sin and what higher power may be out there. You may be abiding by the rules of a deity who isn’t really who you think he is…

It kept my attention and was an easy read.
