Rachel Schommer Reviews: 2.19.24

Reading is just so fun! I love getting to read something a bit different from an author I enjoy; I couldn't recommend this week's book more!

LONESOME OAKS (BOOK 1) by Kelvin V.A Allison

1. Had definite ‘Stranger Things’ vibes in the best possible way. Allison nailed both the coming of age of the main characters as well as the nostalgia of a simpler time. It was so easy for me to put myself into the shoes of the main characters/one of their friend group as I read; it felt like coming home after an evening spent playing night-games with your neighborhood friends. Incredibly familiar and fun.

2. Allison proves his range and confirms his talent as an author with this one. Lonesome Oaks isn’t the normal brutal horror we’ve come to love from him; it’s a coming-of-age mystery with an EPIC twist. Make no mistake though, it’s still un-put-down-able. I found that the relatability of both the characters and the plot, coupled with the mystery kept me flying through the pages. When I did have to put the book down because responsibility came knocking I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

3. At the end I was absolutely dumbstruck – I need book 2 STAT! But seriously, I didn’t see the twist coming at all and was left completely stunned. I love when that happens 😊 I can't wait to see where Allison takes us in book 2.
