You know when life gets, well, lifey and all you want is to go home except home at this point is really more a state of mind or feeling of nostalgia? That's this week's book for me. This will make much more sense when you read below. :)

SHEPHERD’S WARNING by Cailyn Lloyd
1. This book had SO MUCH!! I am a sucker for a haunted house story, but this had way more than just a standard haunted house. There was grief, and lore, and religion, and psychic powers, and old-world witchcraft, and more. Oh, my goodness! (See, told you it had it all)
2. I was originally interested in this book because it takes place in rural Wisconsin right around the area I grew up, so I knew I’d get some vivid imagery during reading. Anyway, I saw the setting and I had to buy it; but it sat on my Kindle for way too long. I wish I had read this sooner! Or, maybe later, because the culmination of the book takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas during a snowstorm for the ages. The kind of snowstorm we used to get here like clockwork. This added to the sense of urgency and provided a closed-in feeling that anyone who has been in the middle of a blizzard can relate to. The plot was already tense at this point and the blizzard gave me that 'Oh, my god I simply cannot stop reading this because I NEED to know what is going to happen' type of feeling I normally get from a really good thriller.
3. This is a bit of a slow burn at the beginning, which I usually struggle with. However, Lloyd writes really good characters, and there was an early ‘hook’ that got me invested in what is ultimately going to happen to the FMC, Laura. She’s a very relatable woman who I felt incredibly bad for while rooting for her success, and survival. She really could use a break; this storyline isn’t it though, LOL.
4. Kenric Shepherd might be one of my favorite side characters in quite a while. You’d think with a title like “Shepherd’s Warning” that he’d be the main character, but nope, just a very interesting and endearing secondary character. I’d love if there were more of him…Cailyn, you listening? 😉
Definitely recommend!
